Wanted: A New Phone

I've been in Las Vegas less than 12 hours and I've already eaten too much (Bouchon) and slept too little (the Venetian). I'm here for the Consumer Electronics Show, the gargantuan tech convention that hits town every year, where I'll spend the next three days trawling the 3,000 booths for the most promising new travel tech toys--everything from cameras and camcorders to global phones and noise canceling headphones (watch this space for photos of my favorite new finds).

But I have a secondary mission: Two days ago my iPhone was filched at a movie theater in New York. To replace it before my contract expires (in June) will cost me $400, $200 more than I'm willing to spend. So, I've decided to cut the Apple cord and, while here, find myself a new phone. Considering the ocean of options, I'm hoping for a little guidance.

Any suggestions? Keep in mind that I need a phone I can travel overseas with, and I'd rather stick with AT&T. Most importantly, I need the phone before I leave Las Vegas on Saturday, so please send your suggestions straightaway

Let me preface by saying I'm no cell phone expert, but as an entertainment exec and self described lover of all things tech, I spend quite a bit of time researching phones and cell plans for employees at my company as well as finding out which phones work best internationally.

I did a little research for you and it looks like your best bet is to purchase a refurbished iPhone. The AT&T website contains lots of refurbished options.

Now, my wife owns an AT&T iPhone and I currently have a Droid with Verizon and I must say, she covets my phone and moreso my superior service! But switching to the Droid/Verizon package will run you more than you're willing to pay right now and may not give you the international service you're accustomed to with AT&T. Since AT&T will eventually roll out their Droid phones, it's worth it for you to band-aid your situation with the refurbished phone while you wait for a new one to hit the market with more bells and whistles.

Hope this helps.
